This webinar will present valuable information to professionals working with families who have an elderly relative. Participants will learn practical methods to identify and analyze ethical dilemmas arising in the care of older adults. The principles of ethics and ethics theory will be discussed as well as moral issues surrounding topics such as: decision-making capacity, informed consent, surrogacy issues, advance directives, NJ POLST (Practitioners Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatments), promising comfort and care, withholding and withdrawing life-sustaining treatment, and the role of ethics committees. This webinar incorporates case studies to examine clinical issues.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Recognize the cultural, technological, and political developments over the past 75 years that have led to an increased focus on ethical issues when working with older adults and their families
• Differentiate between risk management and ethical behavior in clinical practice
• Explain ethical principles such as autonomy, beneficence, justice, truth, and utility & their applications
• Apply several working models of ethical decision-making to cases of older adults and their families

Presenter
Stephen Sidorsky, LCSW
Mr. Sidorsky is a part-time lecturer at the Rutgers School of Social Work, where he teaches Clinical Social Work: Aging and Loss Across the Lifespan. In the Continuing Education Gerontology Program, he teaches webinars on ethics, counseling with older adults, and economic policy and the elderly. He was previously the Director of the George Otlowski Center for Mental Health Care in Perth Amboy and at Jewish Family Services in Fair Lawn.
